I use warm water and paper towel or cotton balls and wipe away from the corner of the eye to outter eye. Also don't use same cottonball or warm wet papertowling on both eyes as if there's an infection you'd not want to spread it (tho it may already be in both eyes).

I use saline solution and make up pads. I do it every morning. and then I dispense cookies. It is part of our routine and the cats accept it. In fact they are usually waiting for it, so I don't have to even catch them.

If they crusties don't wipe away, the saline will soften them and you can scrape it away with a finger nail (in the direction of the fur away from the eye of course).

Make sure the saline is the "preservative free" kind, too.

If Hank has an eye infection and lots of stringy goop and if he will hold still, you can use a q-tip. Hold the q-tip parallel to his face. Start in the corner and then slowly roll the q-tip across the lower lid. The goop will get picked up without it getting smeared/crusty on his facial fur.

I am a firm believer in a very warm (almost hot) washcloth and a back and forth gentle scrub around the area. You have to wipe against the fur to get the goopies. I don't use saline solution because a) I'm cheap and I spend all my money on cat toys and cookies and b) mine hate it. As long as you wipe every day, you can keep up with it. This is my girl, Puffy, her eyes are horrendous. I suggest keeping kleenex on hand (they are like magnets for cat eye gunk) and wiping in the morning, then in the evening doing the gentle back and forth scrub with a hot washcloth...

OR... you can take Dianne's approach and do a spa day for your babies. Hope you don't mind that I'm posting these, Dianne; they are some of my favorite pictures ever and I adore the girls. :D
