Ok...my aunt and I are in the room waiting for the doctor to come talk to us....Jackie looks at me and says, "Have you had your mamogram yet?" Well, I explained, I'm not 40 yet so I had inquired with my OBGYN to see if I could have one done and covered by insurance. The nurse at the OBs office said she would call me to let me know for sure but with a family history that she thought they would cover it if you are in your late 30's. She called this morning to say that my Doctor would fax over a order to the Breast Health Center and for me to call and schedule an appointment. So I called and have an appointment for Feb 23rd at 4:30pm after work. WOW...I probably shouldn't be so scared but I have never had one done before...you hear all the horror stories about it and how painful it is. I am the first to admit I am a "woose!". I know with what has gone on with mom and the fact that her's was only caught quickly like it was because she did routine mamograms...so now is the time to start. Doesn't change the fact I am nervous tho -- the unknown ya know.

Heather good for you. My daughters drive me crazy, they are nearing 50 , my mom had breast cancer and I can't get them to go. It is not anywhere near as bad as it used to be. Go get it done, old people are not the only ones to get this disease.

LOL Dianne -- I certainly don't think my mother is old...she only 58! I'm 38...so if that is old I am not far behind. During the research of this with my mom's situation I discovered how important a baseline is when there is a history of it and apparently I have a grandmother who also had breast cancer -- have no clue if she was a great, or a great-great, or what...but picked it up in coversation with my mom's nurse navigator, Tammy. I didn't ask then because we were gathering info on what we were dealing with and honestly I keep forgetting to ask mom but sounds to me the BHC has the information because she instantly knew my mother's name when they asked me who my mother was (for records I guess).

It certainly is a good thing to get done. My mother made it sound like it was the worst thing in the world but I was kinda disappointed when they were done, I thought that was it. It was not fun but certainly not the horrendous ordeal it was made out to be. Don't worry it is not that bad.

I agree with Susan. Certainly not something you want to do every day but not that bad either. The rewards outweigh the discomfort.

Uncomfortable, but the discomfort does not last and it is all over in minutes -- each discomfort lasts one deep breath. The provincial medicare pays for routine screening for women of a certain age every two years. They remind you and send you the results, as well as to your ob-gyn. Before I qualified for this, my ob-gyn sent me for them every year. No history in my family, but my * are evidently cystic.

It only hurt once and that's because the hormones were screeming and I had a bunch of cyst things... so another round of more detailed pics, waiting for the radiologist to do her thing and $$$200 later they say it's nothing. All that worry thinking the worst and it's nothing!!!!!
