Question. I recently met a woman who used to show Persians many moons ago. She told me some ppl would clip the coat along the back to make the coat more uniform in length and color. I had never heard this. Is it common place for people to trim that fur besides shaping the face. I know there is stuff not "condoned" but done for show, is this one of those things?

Anyone know?

I so not show or breed nor know what all the clips are. Clipping your cat is a personal choice.. showing cats is a whole world in itself. I am sure some could give you that information that show cats.. many do lion cuts, I do a sanitary clip for Bluie for health reasons. .. :paw:

I also do not show but I do believe that showgrooming may inlcude clipping some hair, I know that some breeders pull out the longer so called guard hairs, to indeed give the cat a rounder appearance. Also the "horns'" are peing pulled from the area between the ears at times.
As long as it does not hurt the cat I believe that is fine, it may also depend on the organization you show with, what sort of enhancements are allowed.

In my color division (silvers and goldens) there are some who will use thinning shears to even out color. While I don't think if is exactly against the rules, most judges are not fooled by it.

I didnt mean pers pref for pets, I'm talking about for the actual show ring. And Im not talking about sculpting the face, rough, doing the horns or plucking. This is for SHOW CATS not pets, so lion clip doesnt apply we can show cats in a lion clip, what I am asking about is it looks like some of these cats even if you look through the years at the top 10 rankings in the kitten division, Ch and Premier ship as someone who wons a grooming salon, now that I have looked myself, it DOES look like someone took clippers to the coat to make it all EXACTLY the same length - short almost and inch along the back (actual back not back side, so Im not taking sani strip).

Does anyone who shows care to shed any light?

Lynda does show her cats and her response was in regards to showing, not pets.

Guess that leaves me (and most others) out here. As Dianne pointed out, Lynda is a breeder and does show.

I don't know of any exhibitor of persians that does any clipping along the back. Part of the beauty of persians is their long flowing coat.

Are you looking at pictures of persians? Or maybe these are the exotics that have the short coat?

I don't show, but, I can't see how cutting hair would change or enhance color... most all cats, even solids have shades in their coat.... ????

thanks, my response wasn't to Lindas post. It was re-asking so it was clear I was talking about Gthe GROOMING of show cats not pets. I was trying to clear up any confusion to eliminate numerous posts about lion clips and thinning sheers. I was trying to see if anyone who shows has heard of people using clippers to TRIM the actual back vs, plucking etc. Should have made my question more specific. Thanks for moving it though Admins...I was pretty sure it was a GROOMING question but since its grrom for the show ring apparently I posted in the wrong catagory.

So unless its purely a pet grooming question, it should be under show and birth announcements?
