I hate to start off this way but I am new and have just adopted a female 5 yr old seal point himmy. My question is this. I was told she was very healthy yet she only weighs like 5.5 pounds. I will be taking her in to get an exam and spayed but wanted to get your thoughts on her weight. Everything else, such as her eating bathroom habits cleaning herself well is normal. Her body is petite. I have tried the stuff on the net that tells you how to feel the cat to tell if they are underweight but I am still not sure. I guess the best way is the vet. But is 5.5 lbs okay for a 5 yr old female himmy providing she is heathy in every other way? Thank you.

That totally depends on the cat , that is small but there are others here with cats that small who are just fine. I agree the best answer is going to come from your vet.
We can all give you pointers but the vet will have hands on and will know.
Oh and welcome :D

Thank you. And I just weighed her again and she is now 6.6 lbs...yay!!! We are still going to the vet regardless as she needs to be spayed.

Welcome and congratulations on your new addition. What's her name? And please post photos -- we love photos here!

Good for you for getting her spayed, poor baby hasn't been spayed and she's 5!

Can we see pictures of her please!? We LOVE pictures! :D

I would 6.6 pounds isn't underweight if she is petite. I have a Puffy Puffy Princess who weighs 8 pounds and she is a hefty girl. She has a more petite frame ;) Can you feel her ribs? You said she's eating and drinking plenty so I don't think there's too much to worry about. You can give her Nutrical which will help with weight gain if the vet thinks it's necessary.

Oh... and WELCOME!!

The lady I adopted her from had planned to breed her I guess. I am glad I have her because I would never consider breeding a cat. All my other animals are fixed. I have 2 dogs and 3 cats.

Welcome to Jyspy and you! TO post pictures you just have to upload them to a photo sharing site... like photobucket, kodakgallery, etc...

Then right click on the photo, click "properties", and copy the URL or http code. Then click "Img" above and paste!

Thanks you all so much. As far as posting pics. I do not wish to join any other site. FB is so much easier or just being able to attach the pic with out codes and joining a site. Unfortunately I don't have time for that. My kitty looks exactly like Sassy from Homeward Bound and I mean EXACTLY! LOL. She is a sweetheart.

A 5 year old female who is in-tack has probably cycled alot and her hormones will account for her low weight. You said the woman planned to breed her...has she ever had a litter? It is more concerning to me if she has never had a litter and is underweight at that age. The health issues soar in a situation such as that so I am releived you are getting her spayed.

Regardless of my soapbox...welcome to the forums Jyspy and kissesmom! Try not to worry too much about her weight. I venture to guess that once she is spayed and her hormones have subsided (about 30 days after the spay) she will start to gain.
