I'm trying to get some information, I know a lady who has a persian cat, she has said that her cat recently returned home and her fur is very matted and she cannot afford to get it sorted out. Her only option is to give the cat away she said. I'm wondering if her local rspca or cat protection league could do anything for free? I would hate for her to have to give away her pet  Any advice would be appreciated :)

Hmm, due to the nature of the fur, I'm guessing Persians should be indoor kitties only and not be allowed to roam the neighbourhood. Recently returned makes it sound like kitty went on an extended holiday by itself. Mistakes happen, but if your pal cannot afford a clip or grooming to get it sorted, maybe they can't aford cat food, litter, or vet bills either. Just a thought. On a more helpful note, if your friend has any sort of relationship with a local vet, they may clip the kitty and allow her to pay "on time". and then just be sure to make grooming part of the daily routine.

cheers!

I would agree. Persians need daily grooming and (in my opinion) more vet trips than the average kitty. Mats are extremely painful for the kitty, if she is willing to give her up because she can't deal with the mats, she is probably better in another home. You can call your local ASPCA but I assume they would take the animal from her because it was ill cared for? I'm not sure. BUt good luck and give that baby a kiss!

Thanks! She mentioned she had been ill lately so I don't know if that has had anything to do with it, but I've passed on some information so hopefully she'll be able to get something sorted as soon as possible.

Thanks for your help :)

Sophie, I don't know where you are located (Canada or the UK). If you are in the UK, have your friend contact Chapelhouse Persian Rescue. They sometimes help out in such cases. If you are in Canada, try contacting local cat rescues -- a few may help, most won't.

Dan and Kira -- While you both make a good point that if this lady can't afford grooming, then maybe she should give up the cat. And if you asked me a few years ago, I would have agreed. But the more I dealt with rescue groups, the more my eyes were opened and I've rethought this. The problem is, give it up to whom? Put an ad in the local paper for an older, matted Persian? (Older as in 2+ years) Dump it at a shelter? How about a rescue? A rescue may take it or may not take -- US rescues are picky, most have no room. Also, some rescues will tell you, if an owner can care for the cat but needs money for grooming or a vet bill, it's cheaper for the rescue and better for the cat to stay with that person.

Sophie,
Not sure where you live or how things function in your neck of the woods/area however here if a friend or neighbor is aware that a person has been ill and has had difficulty caring for their pets one might try to raise the awareness of some locals/neighbors to pitch in $5-$10 each that could pay for the grooming and maybe gather some cat food for the person or have people volunteer to groom (comb) the cat on a regular basis (someone who maybe has a Persian and knows how to care for their coat). Also people that are involved in church groups can often raise some help/assistance for one of the church members so that's another avenue as well as trying to contact a local rescue group and seeing if there is any $ assistance there. Often perhaps talking to local Vet on behalf of the person might also foster perhaps a free grooming or greatly reduced fee for grooming esp. if the person has been very ill.

I too would have initially said maybe the person cannot afford to continue to care for her cat as Persians are a bigger financial committment than a regular short haired cat at least in the grooming dept (and my experience has been they also need more Vet care as well). However sometimes people go thru rough patches and if they can just get a bit of help there may be hope in terms of keeping one's pet. Hopefully that'd be the case for this lady. It's very kind of you to come here and inquire for her. I do hope she will find some assistance that allows her to keep her Persian kitty and take care of the grooming ASAP as matting can become very bad and lead to further problems if not taken care of in a timely manner.
