I went to see my parents in Ocala, FL last Wednesday and got back yesterday. The kitties and dogs were all very glad to see me. It was nice getting away, but even nicer coming home, though I did have to clean the house this morning. BF took care of everyone, but his cleaning isn't as thorough as mine, so the house kinda stunk when I got home. Yuk. It's all clean now, though.

Before I left for my trip, my mother said she was thinking about getting another dog. They haven't had a dog since their Jack Russell died 2 years ago. Apparently there was a huge seizure of a mill down there and they took over 300 live animals and found more than 350 dead ones on this guy's property. We were going to go to the shelter to see the dogs, but the guy's lawyer filed a petition to get the animals back. (Don't even get me started on what kind of a dirtbag that lawyer must be--he said there was a "misunderstanding" about the 350+ dead animals on the guy's property. Yeah, right). I spent some time looking around on Petfinder and on Saturday, we went to Petsmart where a small dog rescue group had adoptions. I saw a pretty little Pekinese, but this little brown dog caught my parents' attention. They spent time with him and decided to adopt him. the adoption fee was an outrageous $450!! All of the rescue groups in FL seem to charge very high prices for adoptions, even for mixed breeds. My mother hesitated, but I knew she wanted the little guy, so I offered to pay half for her for Christmas or whatever holiday. She adopted him. He's a Brussells Griffon and she named him Nikko, the name of the head monkey in the Wizard of Oz. The breed is known as the Monkey-dog. He's all of 7 pounds and is a firecracker. He's busy, but not hyper. He's very smart and pretty cute. Poor little guy was left in his house when his family moved away. The neighbors heard him barking and he was rescued. We have no idea how long he was left alone. He's a good boy and is very funny. Here's a picture of what he looks like:

He kind of looks like a Gremlin to me.:) He followed me around for the 2 days I had left of my visit.

We went to Homosassa Springs to see the manatees to the Russell Stover candy outlet, but otherwise, just kind of hung around and relaxed. It was nice. Now my parents have a little pooch again, so I am sure they will be busy with him.

Oh my gosh I love those dogs! That is the same kind that was in the movie "As Good As It Gets" with Jack Nicholoson and Helen Hunt. They are adorable!!! So sweet of you to split the costs too. I'm sure your mother is going to love that little dog. Congrats!!

What a CUTE little guy!

I have a great Idea on what to do with the Mill Owner and the 300+ animals... 8-)

If they didn't have shot records... Update imunizations, Spay or neuter and charge him $20 a day for boarding. Then send the bill to him and a copy to the lawyer.

I guestemate the rescue could collect $300...not that he would pay

 I remember seeing the news on this dirtbag. I don't know how many homes here in FL have had hundreds of dogs, cats, turtles, birds, ect found by the police. Sick people who just want to take in everything but have no idea how to care for them.

I love that dog and am so glad your mother has him now. What an adorable face and a very nice gift for her. :flower:

How adorable!!! The first thing I thought of was how Jack Nicholson bribed him in the movie with bacon in his pocket. One of my good friends has a Brussels Griffon and he has the most amazing personality. I'm so glad your parents found him.

Please tell me how someone can move out of their home and leave a defenseless animal inside.

Awwww what a darling little dog for your parents, I am glad you went to the shelter with them and saved one poor soul.

About the lawyer )&)=`****how can evidence of 350 dead dogs be considered a misunderstanding??? Someone would have to explain that to me very clearly for me to buy it and I hope the judge who deals with this sends those who deserve to the same * these dogs have lived in. For ten years or so:)

Denise, how nice that you were able to visit with your paernts, and congratulations to them on the new doggy!Such a beautiful gift to them, Denise.
What a sweet- faced cutey he is too! :) I love little Nikko! :flower:

As for the lawyer and the guy trying to get back his animals... nice try!
If it wasnt so pathetically sad, it would be almost laughable; the premise that 350 dead animals found could be explained away as a "misunderstanding".

I will have to post some of the pictures of Nikko. The one I posted is one i got from the AKC site, so it isn't him, though he's very close in looks to that dog. My mother called me yesterday with a few "firsts" that he had--he's only 11 months old and is still learning how to be a pet, so there will be lots of firsts along the way.

I do really hope that the judge puts the guy with the dead animals away for life. Maybe his lawyer can be his cellmate. I once wanted to be a lawyer, and I understand the need for a fair trial, but really, how can anyone defend such cruel and negligent behavior?!!?? That's why I am not a lawyer.....
